Picture rail — Functional molding installed 7–9 feet above the floor from which framed pictures and paintings are hung using picture wire and picture rail hooks. Primarily seen in older homes with plaster walls, as hammering in nails from to hang pictures would cause damage to the plaster. Furthermore, the plaster may not be strong enough to support a nail with a picture hung on it.
